Position Summary:
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Senior Scientist (Biomedical and Clinical Informatics) for the Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC).
As part of a larger team of research scientists, the incumbent will support the Rutgers University biomedical research community, as well as other research disciplines, in their research computing and data related research. In partnership with the research community and other biomedical and clinical informatics specialists, the successful candidate will manage and analyze data being created in molecular and cellular biology, genomics and biomedicine through the use of existing data science and machine learning tools as well as engineer new toolsets that include models, algorithms, and software developed in-house. Reporting to the Director of Research Support, under the Associate Vice President for Advanced Research Computing, the Senior Scientist engages in local outreach on the Rutgers campuses (Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, New Brunswick, Newark and Camden) to identify potential new users of research computing and data resources. The incumbent works closely with faculty, post-doctoral associates, students, and research staff to understand their research to allow for the customization of workflows, training, and support, and has an opportunity to grow a biomedical and clinical informatics team based on demand for biomedical and clinical informatics services.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Participates in development of new biomedical and clinical informatics research and support model, potentially leading to creation of a core facility and/or center of excellence.
Develops and maintains data pipelines to facilitate the smooth flow and collection of clinical research data, integrating various sources for comprehensive analysis. Utilize expertise in data wrangling techniques to clean, transform, and prepare raw data for analysis, ensuring data quality and consistency.
Gains knowledge of other biomedical and clinical informatics activities and support within Rutgers University and facilitate their involvement in research projects that may require their area of specialty.
Provides education, outreach and training to the university community. Develop and coordinate instructor-based training focused on advanced computing.
Optimizes data systems for performance, ensuring efficient storage, retrieval, and staging of data for analysis and reporting purposes.
Collaborates closely with Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) teams to align data engineering efforts with broader infrastructure strategies and capabilities.
Participates in professional development activities (e.g., training, conferences, etc.), advance personal knowledge in computational science, and develop individual research projects. Present at national meetings.
Develops and expand internal and external partnerships, including industry, to promote advanced computing-related collaborations, positioning Rutgers University as a leader in research and technologies.
Assists with the implementation of OARC data science resources, including computing systems software data transfer nodes, software defined networking, and compliant protected environments for medical research that requires access to PHI, EMR, or other forms of sensitive data (HIPAA, FISMA, NIST 800-171).
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master's degree required.
Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirements.
A minimum of six (6) years experience supporting computationally intensive and/or data intensive research projects or equivalent work.
