Position Description
The purpose of the Power Electrical Engineer is to be responsible for the engineering and work order preparation for all work on the District’s electric system. The Power Electrical Engineer will have expertise in power system planning and design. This position will cover generation, transmission, and distribution. The Power Electrical Engineer collaborates with numerous suppliers, vendors, contractors, developers, and customers to plan, design, and implement new additions to the electric system and prepares for long-range construction programs.
Essential Job Functions
Assume responsibility for all engineering and work order preparation on the district’s electric system
Collaborate with customers and Operations department personnel to design and plan facilities that provide electrical service to new and expanding loads.
Collaborate with District suppliers and wholesalers to ensure that proper electrical service is well-coordinated.
Analyze the distribution, substation, and transmission system loading.
Assist in planning and rate analysis studies.
Provide cost estimates to customers for new facilities.
Assist in planning new additions to the electrical system and contribute to the preparation of the long-range construction program.
Experience with AutoCAD drafting or an equivalent program. Drafting of PV system and transmission line designs.
Engineering calculations.
Project tracking & management.
Experience with SCADA system implementation, integration, operation, support, and maintenance activities.
A working knowledge of the application of engineering principles and practices involved in designing and laying out electrical distribution systems, including both overhead and underground systems.
Requires working knowledge of the National Electric Code and National Electrical Safety Code.
Assist with electrical distribution engineering design and layout for the expansion of the electrical distribution system, including power requirements, related specifications, and applicable codes.
Develop, communicate, and distribute construction standards and engineering assistance in response to requests from other departments.
Oversee the preparation and maintenance of maps and official records for the District.
Furnish detailed requisitions to the Purchasing Department for the procurement of materials and equipment and assist in evaluating bids.
Coordinate the District’s construction process with government subdivisions for the maximum benefit of the District.
Secure permits, waivers, and contracts as required by the District from other utilities and government subdivisions for the installation, maintenance, and operation of the District’s facilities and communication system.
Compare expenditures with budget projections for the engineering department.
Prepare work orders for the electric system.
Responsible for system planning studies.
Provide recommendations for electrical system protection to maintain system reliability.
Oversee the performance of inspections at various facilities to analyze proper operation and assess the condition of the facilities.
Receives and analyzes service requests, preparing engineering orders to provide adequate and timely service to consumers.
Investigates, designs, and stakes distribution cable replacement projects and other projects as assigned; and prepares necessary staking sheets and permits to initiate required construction. Easements for new and updated line.
Must be able to drive a vehicle to the site location within the District and be able to traverse on foot on all types of terrain to make inspections. Have a valid Nebraska Driver’s License.
Must be able to draw sketches of pole assembly, maps, and electrical structures.
Performs necessary tasks associated with customer generation requests and other renewable projects on the distribution system.
Have or become a General Notary – State of Nebraska
Attend Board meetings when required.
Working Conditions
Outdoor work is required in a variety of weather conditions in addition to normal office working conditions. Occasional work outside of normal work hours will be required.
Physical Requirements
Medium work requiring exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force more frequently. Lifting and carrying 10 to 50 pounds occasionally. Exposure to varying temperature conditions, including cold below 32 degrees and heat above 100 degrees. Minimal exposure to fumes, odors, gases, chemicals, poor ventilation, dust, and dirt. Hazardsinclude electrical. Must be able to use office equipment such as a copier, computer, and printer. Must be able to read, write and do arithmetic. Requires conducting research and measuring. Must be able to present information to others
Education and experience
Bachelor of Science in Engineering.
At least 2 years of experience in Electrical Distribution System.
Supervisory Experience
Design/implementation of PV Systems (preferred).
At least 2 years of work experience related to electrical engineering.
Maintain a valid Nebraska driver’s license with a responsible driving record.
