The NIMBUS Lab is seeking to hire a full-time temporary robotics research engineer to assist faculty researchers with meeting deliverables on multiple externally-funded research projects. This temporary appointment may be renewable, pending funding availability. The position requires the ability to develop and field test robotic systems including those for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), provide leadership to research teams comprised of undergraduate and graduate students, and work alongside faculty members to prepare technical reports and publications.
This position will manage and coordinate assigned research projects and supervise laboratory facilities within the College of Engineering in support of the Nebraska Intelligent MoBile Unmanned Systems (NIMBUS) Lab. Support faculty researchers in the design, testing, and building of experimental hardware and software and prototypes related to robotic systems, and assist in hardening technologies for field use. Other responsibilities include: coordinating day-to-day facility use, instructing and supervising undergraduate and graduate students in the use and operation of laboratory equipment, and maintaining laboratory equipment. This position will also be responsible for helping with research reports and status/progress reports; managing and overseeing data acquisition, handling, and storage; and leveraging this data for tables, figures, etc. in support of refereed journal articles, conference papers, and research summaries.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Nebraska Intelligent MoBile Unmanned Systems (NIMBUS) Lab is a leader in field robotics with a focus on developing unique capabilities for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Our capabilities span electrical, mechanical, computing, autonomy, and human factors that allow us to build end-to-end solutions for custom single- and multi-agent UAS missions, e.g. payload transfer via cable capture, sensor emplacement. Our organization is led by three tenured professors with over 40 years of experience deploying UAS in field operations, having deployed robots on three continents; we have also successfully commercialized prior projects from the NIMBUS Lab. The expertise of the lead faculty includes: electrical and mechanical design of UAS subsystems, adaptive autonomy to predict failures and ensure success, optimization of resources and mission planning, and creating seamless workflows to enable successful deployment by end users.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln seeks to attract and retain a high performing and collaborative workforce. UNL is committed to providing a work environment and culture that fosters personal and professional success where every person and every interaction matters. The University is proud to be one of Nebraska's preferred and largest employers where individuals are able to participate and contribute to their full potential.
