The Position: The Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM), one of the nation’s newest medical schools, located in downtown Wichita, Kansas, invites applications for a faculty appointment in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Qualified applicants with experience and dedication to teaching pharmacology to medical students are sought for an open rank faculty position. This position has no associated clinical duties, and KansasCOM can be flexible regarding appointment (full-time or part-time), and will consider hybrid and/or remote online employment for an applicant with demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching pharmacology.
This position will function as a member of a collaborative educational team that develops and delivers content across an integrated, educational program. Primary responsibilities will involve teaching medical students through the integrated, systems-based curriculum of the first and second academic years, and will involve the development of discipline-based, collaboratively designed, and highly integrated curricular elements. A demonstrated ability to work within a team of medical educators from basic science and clinical disciplines to develop instructional materials and presentations is a must. Additional teaching and mentoring responsibilities may exist in the third and fourth years and will focus on the application of foundational science knowledge to senior medical students seeking advanced experience.
Whereas teaching is the primary focus, service, scholarship and research are fundamental elements of a faculty role. Service to the College and the community is an essential function of the position, including committee service, faculty development, student mentoring/advising, interviewing prospective students, and community outreach. The College is strengthening its scholarly activity involvement, broadly defined as including basic science (bench), translational, clinical, educational, public health/epidemiologic, or other scholarly endeavors.
Responsibilities:
Participate in teaching pharmacology, primarily within the pre-clinical curriculum.
Develop and prepare teaching materials (presentations, lectures, exam items, etc.).
Develop and maintain educational materials, including correlations to Osteopathic Principles and Practice.
Demonstrate professionalism as defined by the KansasCOM declaration of faculty professionalism and responsibility.
Serve as a student advisor and mentor, including promoting and mentoring student research.
Engage in scholarly activity that results in presentations at professional meetings and/or peer-reviewed journals.
Participate in prospective student interviewing.
Serve on selected departmental, college, and faculty committees and task forces.
Participate in and deliver professional development for KansasCOM.
Assist in accreditation, assessment, and quality improvement functions to include document creation, data collection and management, education of faculty as assigned.
Foster a positive culture amongst the students, faculty, and KHSU-KansasCOM staff.
Participate in professional activities, societies, and associations, enhancing personal and institutional recognition and standing.
Serve as requested/assigned, in academic leadership roles (Course Director, etc.).
Perform other related duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
A terminal degree (PhD, DO, MD, etc.) in pharmacology or a relevant related field from an accredited institution of higher education with appropriate experience for an Assistant Professor (or higher) position.
A track record of academic experience in biomedical sciences education (medical school experience preferred).
Maintain appropriate licensure for practice in health care and be in good standing with all regulatory and licensing boards and agencies, as applicable.
Evidence of skills in technology applied to classroom work.
Demonstrated evidence and/or a plan for supporting students from diverse backgrounds in the academic community.
Preferred Qualifications:
Postdoctoral experience in the field of pharmacology.
Additional training or experience in educational theory and/or evaluation.
A record of success as a medical educator.
Experience using innovative teaching methods, which may include team-based learning, ‘flipped classroom’, problem-based learning, distance learning, interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, curriculum delivery systems.
Experience with curricular and instructional design.
Record of scholarly activity.

DO Program Different from most medical schools, the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program immerses each student in early clinical experiences starting in their first academic year. Through clinical practice, standardized patient encounters, and human-patient simulation, students gain firsthand experience identifying and addressing patient needs. This program provides opportunities to make a difference in patients’ lives far before clinical rotations. This program’s teachings will also provide students with a foundation to work within any sector of health care they desire, apart from direct patient care positions.
Department of Biomedical Sciences Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, these faculty positions will become part of a dynamic and integral part of the College, focusing on providing a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of biomedical sciences. This KansasCOM department is pivotal in laying the foundational knowledge necessary for future healthcare professionals, particularly those pursuing osteopathic medicine.
Leadership Tiffany Masson, Psy.D., President of Kansas Health Science University (KHSU), is an exemplary leader in higher education with more than 15 years of experience leading teams to find innovative, technology-driven solutions to the concerns facing universities across the world. Accreditation Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM) has been granted pre-accreditation status from the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). COCA is the accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) for predoctoral education of osteopathic physicians in the United States.
Pre-accreditation, as distinct from full accreditation, permits the KansasCOM to solicit applications and admit students, offer medical instruction within the approved osteopathic medical curriculum, and announce its Pre-Accreditation Status. KansasCOM can be considered for full accreditation status following the graduation of its first class, which it anticipates will occur in May 2026. The attainment of full accreditation status is subject to review and approval by COCA.
