WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are currently recruiting for the position of Public Works Engineer. This position will be located in Missoula, MT. The Public Works Engineer provides manager-level technical expertise to solve complex railroad engineering problems. Primarily works with local, state, and federal/government agencies on public projects affecting railroad operations. Additionally, works with Engineering, Administrative and Operating department personnel and outside parties (e.g. customers) to develop and implement engineering solutions to business-related problems.
LOCATION: Missoula, MT
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Understands basic behavior-based safety programs and applies knowledge to ensure understanding and gain cooperation to enhance MRL safety culture
- Demonstrates dedication to working safely by always following safety rules and using sound judgment and expertise when planning work activity for self and others
- Exemplifies company values of safety, trust, accountability, respect, and teamwork
- Develops agreements and estimates costs for railroad construction activities for public agency projects affecting the railroad
- Provides technical design and construction oversight for railroad engineering projects throughout the entire MRL system. Ensures work performed meets FRA and MRL standards
- Analyzes technical problems and makes recommendations for solutions
- Provides customer track design and cost estimates in coordination with Marketing Dept.
- Manages engineering projects designed by outside consultants.
- Maintains FRA Grade Crossing Information System database for over 800 active grade crossings
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related engineering discipline required
- Railroad engineering experience (including grade crossing designs) beneficial
- Knowledge of engineering principles, particularly railroad engineering principles as outlined by the American Railway Engineering and MOW Assoc. (AREMA) preferred
- In-depth understanding of easement and rights of way laws
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Self-motivated with ability to solve complex railroad engineering problems
- Proficient in engineering software programs (AutoCAD and Civil 3D) and engineering survey equipment
- Knowledgeable about rules related to federal aid reimbursements for railroad construction associated public projects
- Flexible verbal communication skills needed to communicate with all levels of MRL employees
- Effective written communication skills to include strong technical writing ability
