The Department operates and maintains the City's nearly 5,000 miles of existing streets and managing the planning, design, and construction of new streets, including multi-modal infrastructure. Department resources include a staff of over 600 dedicated full-time employees, an annual operating budget of $109 million, and a five-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP) of $860 million. The Department is comprised of four divisions: Management Services, Programming and Project Delivery, Street Maintenance, and Traffic Services.
In general, the Deputy Street Transportation Director position is responsible for organizing, planning, directing, and managing the activities of an assigned division by meeting performance objectives; managing complex programs and projects with staff; preparing and making presentations at various meetings; and serving on committees and interdepartmental groups. The position reports directly to the Street Transportation Director or to the Assistant Street Transportation Director. Supervision is exercised over professional, supervisory, technical, and field staff. Frequent consultation and coordination with Street Transportation management staff, City Manager's Office, City Council staff, citizens, and other agencies and jurisdictions regarding policy proposals and solving complex problems is common.
As Deputy Street Transportation Director, the position will evaluate technical information and provide valid recommendations to complex issues; develop and manage division budgets; evaluate for operational efficiency and innovation; and be responsible for the implementation of city and department policies. A Deputy Street Transportation Director must possess excellent communication skills, the ability to build relationships of trust with stakeholders, and be committed to continuous improvement, collaborative teamwork, and excellent customer service.

This recruitment is specifically for the Deputy Street Transportation Director over the Traffic Services Division. The Deputy Street Transportation Director for the Traffic Services Division exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment and reports directly to the Assistant Street Transportation Director. Supervision is exercised over professional, supervisory, technical, and field staff.
This position will lead the Traffic Services Division and work with city departments, unions, outside agencies, vendors, residents, and businesses to ensure the highest levels of customer service and efficient operations. The Traffic Services Division is responsible for ensuring the safe movement of all roadway users including vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. Primary responsibilities include requests for new/replacement of street signs, new/repair of traffic signals/left-turn arrows, new/repair of streetlights, traffic and school safety issues, removal of visibility obstructions, parking issues, neighborhood cut-through traffic, and permits to use right-of-way for construction or special events.
Up to $131,976.00 annually. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The City contributes 9% of salary into 457/401(a) plans with no matching required. $3,600/annual car allowance and $1,440/annual cell phone allowance.
