The City of Davis seeks an Assistant Director of Public Works - Transportation to oversee the Transportation Division of the Public Works Engineering and Transportation Department. The successful candidate will have expertise in traffic engineering and transportation design and engineering management to ensure City-owned infrastructure, assets, and facilities are constructed and modified in a functional and safe condition. This role enables public works staff to provide the highest quality service to the City of Davis residents and students to enjoy a healthy, safe, and pleasant environment in which to live, work, and study. The successful candidate will support the Public Works Director of Engineering & Transportation with managing the effective use of Division resources, improving productivity and customer service across the Division, and reviewing traffic and transportation plans. This position will also help develop and manage an annual department operating budget of approximately $16M. The ideal candidate will have experience building teams and programs, developing budgets, implementing transportation planning, and standardizing procedures and methods to improve efficiency. The Assistant Director oversees approximately four staff and leads the daily functions of the Transportation Division. This individual is responsible for overseeing that transportation infrastructure, facilities, transit services, and capital improvement projects are designed, engineered, constructed, maintained and/or modified in a presentable and safe condition. Much of this role involves supervising staff and operations, making project management and planning skills essential for the successful candidate to have. The selected candidate will have in-depth knowledge of administrative and technical expertise regarding civil and transportation engineering. Other functions of this leadership position include monitoring changes in relevant regulations and technology, conducting operational studies and investigations, and inspecting various traffic projects — all requiring a strong background and passion for the field.
