The Senior Roadway Design / Safety Engineer will lead transportation safety and mobility improvement projects in the Austin Transportation Department. The position will be responsible for transportation safety studies, preliminary engineering & design and detailed design of transportation improvement projects. These projects would require meaningful coordination with other divisions, departments, and partnering agencies. The top candidate will act as lead Safety Engineer and senior roadway designer of transportation projects in Traffic Engineering Division and will coordinate the implementation of engineering improvements at high-priority intersections.In addition to leading the transportation design projects, this position will bring proficiency in responding to documented traffic safety concerns utilizing established engineering guidelines; conducting transportation safety and operational engineering studies, road safety audits, and collision reviews; implementing transportation system improvements to accommodate all users consistent with the City of Austin’s Complete Streets policy; and developing strategies and policies for improving safety and mobility.The preferred candidate will provide technical assistance and successfully collaborate with various City of Austin Departments, local and regional agencies, and public stakeholders to develop improvements. They will respond to inquiries by Mayor and Council, City Manager’s Office, and other agencies regarding transportation issues. This position will represent the City of Austin at public meetings with neighborhood groups, community stakeholders, Commissions, Boards, and/or other regional and local agencies.
The ideal candidate will be a versatile senior engineer, bringing the following preferred qualifications to transportation safety projects to accommodate all users:
Engineer CGraduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus eight (8) years engineering experience acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
Licenses and Certifications Required:Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas
