Description of the positions: Postdoctoral positions are available in the laboratory of Eduardo Blumwald in the Department of Plant Sciences, University of California at Davis. The successful candidates will be part of a team developing Nitrogen-fixing cereal crops (wheat, rice, etc.) using a multidisciplinary approach that combines Biochemistry, Gene Expression, Metabolomics, Chemical Genomics and Plant Transformation.
Required Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Biochemistry, Plant Pathology, Bacterial Genetics or related fields. Significant experience with plant-microbe interactions, molecular biology techniques and genetic manipulation of plants and bacteria. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work with other scientists are required. The positions are available immediately and are renewable for up to three years.

About the Blumwald Lab: We successfully applied a Systems Biology approach (combining genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and enzyme function analysis) to identify genes and gene networks mediating the response(s) of crop plants to abiotic stresses. We focus on the mechanisms associated with ion homeostasis, source/sink relationships and nutrient use efficiency to generate transgenic crops with increased stress tolerance and improved yield. We have recently identified key factors favoring the association of soil-bound Nitrogen-fixing bacteria and rice and generated transgenic plants able to use atmospheric nitrogen and grow under reduced nitrogen fertilization (papers in preparation). Our research has been funded by NSF, DOE, BARD and several Agro/Biotech Companies
