The Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (CBE) at the University of Maine, Orono, Maine, invites applications for the position of the J. Larcom Ober Chair in Chemical Engineering. The Ober Chair was established in 1989 by a bequest from J. Larcom Ober, B.S. 1913. The purpose of the Endowed Chair is to promote excellence in chemical engineering with an emphasis on pulp and paper applications. The funds distributed from the endowment are available to support the Chair holder, research staff, equipment, supplies, travel, and other professional expenses of the Chair’s team. The CBE department is seeking an outstanding scholar with teaching experience in chemical engineering and with research expertise in pulp-and-paper-related fields.
The CBE department offers ABET accredited B.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, and it offers M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, as well as a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering. The department has 17 full-time regular faculty and teaching staff. It collaborates with faculty members in the School of Forest Resources through the Forest Bioproducts Research Institute (FBRI).
FBRI has unique pilot plant infrastructure to support research on pulping, papermaking, coating, nanocellulose, and conversion of woody biomass to fuels (synthetic crude oil derived), chemicals and advanced materials. This infrastructure includes a pilot paper machine, pilot coater, pilot facility for nanocellulose production, biomass to bioproducts pilot plant, and synthetic crude oil pilot plant located on-campus at the Process Development Center (PDC) and off-campus at the Technology Research Center (TRC). Both PDC & TRC bring in many industry/business contacts.
In addition to the FBRI, collaborative multi-disciplinary research opportunities abound with established research centers/labs such as the Frontier Institute for Research in Sensor Technologies (FIRST), the Advanced Structures & Composites Center (ASCC), the Climate Change Institute, and the Aquaculture Research Center. The CBE department has a long-standing relationship with the UMaine Pulp & Paper Foundation which provides a network of industry and business leaders.
