The City of Austin Transportation Department (ATD) is seeking an innovative engineer to consult and lead one of our engineering operations groups within the Smart Mobility Division. This is an exciting opportunity to plan, organize, and implement/support emerging mobility engineering solutions that enhance mobility for all modes of transportation – motorists, transit, bicyclists, micromobility, and pedestrians. The ideal candidate is proficient in transportation engineering operation and safety, has an in-depth understanding of local and national engineering best practices, is comfortable with flexibility, can work in a bustling work environment, and can effectively communicate with the public and elected officials. This position requires simultaneously managing multiple projects and the ability to shift from one project to another without sacrificing quality. The ideal candidate will be a versatile professional engineer and project manager with the following knowledge and abilities: - Knowledge of the state-of-the-practice of Intelligent Transportation Systems from national communities of practice such as NACTO, AASHTO, IEEE, USDOT, FCC, and DOE.
- Successful candidate is a subject matter expert focusing on Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and Smart Cities solutions – including ATMS interfaces with Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Traffic Management, and Adaptive Traffic Control.
- The role requires a proven track record of solid leadership, technical, organizational, and communication skills and as well as professional engineering experience in the ITS industry.
- Knowledge of intelligent transportation and traffic management systems, technology, and applications.
- Knowledge of transportation planning and traffic engineering practices, principles, modeling tools and cost estimates.
- Excellent team working and problem-solving skills with internal and external members to accomplish organizational goals.
- Excellent written and verbal skills to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including meetings and public events.
- Ability to prepare and review various engineering plans and reports.
Preferred Qualifications The ideal candidate will be a versatile engineer, bringing the following preferred qualifications to transportation development projects and implement transportation system improvements to accommodate all users: - Proficiency in transportation engineering fundamentals: respond to the applicants, developers and their Experience managing public sector engineering projects, including large Capital Improvement Projects or Programs related to utility, transportation and mobility infrastructure that are large and complex in nature. Experience in standardization working groups (candidate should highlight any experience as an editor, rapporteur or chair of standards bodies).
- Ability to provide technical input and strategic direction to multiple work teams including external stakeholders, partner agencies, etc., to successfully deliver high-need, time-critical projects; develop vision and implementation framework for the program.
- Familiarity or experience with connected vehicle technology (V2X), including dedicated short-range communication (DSRC), cellular V2X (C-V2X), next generation communications technologies (5G, 802.11 Next-Gen V2X, etc.), connected-automation, and other transportation-related technologies preferred. Understanding of wireline and wireless radio technology principles (in particular, C-V2X). Experience in wireline and wireless system design and evaluation.
- Experience in all phases of the development lifecycle, including requirements definition, software/systems design, implementation, testing, and integration.
- Experience with perception (cameras, radar, lidar) and/or localization (GPS, inertial measurement unit) sensors.
- Experience with solutions in the areas of Advanced Traffic Management, Smart Lighting, Connected Vehicle solutions (V2I) and Mobility-as-a-Service.
- Experience in progressively responsible positions which manage ITS solutions and transportation infrastructure projects with a minimum budget of $10M.
Minimum qualifications include graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering, plus eight (8) years related experience acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
