UNC has a very strong research infrastructure. External research funding surpasses more than $1B and the School of Medicine (SOM) is ranked #6 among public medical schools for NIH funding with 18 departments ranked in the top 25 and all basic science departments ranked in the top 10. UNC’s 36 Centers and Programs support interdisciplinary research with more than 80 state-of-the-art cores across the SOM and campus. UNC is also home to the NC Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute, supported by a Clinical and Translational Science Award from NIH since 2008. UNC is also a leader in imaging with the Biomedical Research Imaging Center providing researchers with access to a wide array of cutting-edge technologies for human imaging, animal imaging and cyclotron/radiochemistry.
