Head of Safety and Mission Assurance

The Head of Safety and Mission Assurance is responsible for developing and implementing overall Laboratory safety and mission assurance policy, serving as mission assurance lead for ongoing space and other high priority projects, for mission assurance training for project participants and for the development and implementation of a Laboratory-wide quality system. For new programs, the Safety and Mission Assurance Office supports Lincoln Laboratory program managers and works with sponsor personnel to develop mission assurance plans adapted to the Lincoln environment. For on-going programs, the Safety and Mission Assurance Office provides mission assurance engineering, non-advocate mission assurance assessments, conducts safety and mission assurance audits and leads mishap investigations. The Head of Safety and Mission Assurance reports to the Laboratory Director’s Office, serves as the Deputy Lead for the Laboratory’s Mission Assurance Board and also develops and maintains the Laboratory’s strategic plan for mission assurance.
Over a nearly seventy year period, MIT Lincoln Laboratory has successfully developed space and suborbital payloads, large ground-based or airborne radar and optical sensor systems, and other high priority advanced technologies for DoD and NASA. These include RF and laser satellite communications, imaging and space tracking instruments, and electronic protection packages. Many of the technical advancements demonstrated by these payloads and systems have been transferred to industry and have served as enablers for significant operational capability. Effective safety, quality and mission assurance processes have been instrumental in our success. To consolidate, integrate, standardize and monitor these processes, MIT Lincoln Laboratory operates a Safety and Mission Assurance Office.
