Minimum Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to the development and construction of municipal public works projects. Considerable knowledge of the laws and ordinances relating to public engineering practices. Working knowledge of public works administration. Ability to plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of others. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
Education: Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in civil engineering.
Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering including two years in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
Necessary Special Requirement: Registration or eligibility for registration as a professional engineer in the state of North Dakota; valid North Dakota driver license or the ability to obtain one within thirty days.
Desirable Requirement: Registration or eligibility for registration as a land surveyor in the state of North Dakota.
Equipment Used in Job Performance: Engineering equipment, computer, calculator, construction inspection equipment, drafting equipment, surveying equipment, motor vehicle, mobile radio, telephone.
Physical Demands: Work is performed in both office and field settings. Outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites, or public works facilities, While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle , feel or operate objects, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and smell. The employee must often lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers and various pieces of office equipment. Must be physically present in attendance at the worksite.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and fast moving construction equipment and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock or radiation, explosives and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to very loud.
The City of Williston offers a completitive salary to commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include fully paid health insurance for either a single or family plan, life insurance, pension plan, and a generous leave package to include vacation, sick, and holiday leave. The salary range for the City Engineer will be $120,000 to $150,000 based upon education and experience.
