Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic, and growing jurisdiction in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, is seeking a highly motivated and qualified transportation planner to work on a wide range of transportation planning studies, capital projects, and multi-modal transportation solutions. Primary duties are related to major transportation projects associated with the Dulles Metrorail Project, I-66 improvements, and other large-scale, complex regional transportation initiatives. Reviews high level multimodal transportation planning/analysis and coordinates transportation projects through various stages of planning, design, engineering, construction, and project closeout. Requires extensive coordination with various county agencies along with elected officials at all levels of government. In addition, assists in the coordination efforts with the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority, Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and Federal Transit Administration.Specific duties include:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus four years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to")NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Strong background in multiple aspects of transportation including planning and construction is preferred. Requires experience in project management for large scale and complex transportation projects. Experience coordinating with local, state, and federal government organizations, experience with government organizations in the Washington, D. C. metropolitan area would be preferred. Ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities which accurately reflect the importance of the job and accomplish department goals and objectives. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. Ability to perform field analysis and inspection of transit facilities and construction projects. Familiarity with land conveyance process and procedures is preferred. Experience working with multiple county agencies as well as large community groups, elected officials, residents, business groups, and associations.
