Key Considerations:Minimum ten (10) years of experience as a consulting electrical engineer with the ability to register in multiple states and manage qualified staff and sub-consultants in multiple offices. Demonstrated leadership providing technical design and support of operating electrical facilities within either the petroleum-terminal and/or aviation-fuel-facility marketplace(s) is required. Nation-wide travel can be expected from time to time, but will not become a frequent routine.
This position reports directly to the President of Currier & Company, Inc. (CURRIER) which is a diverse, established firm and a fast-growing leader in multi-market liquid-fuel-handling consulting & design. The position of Consulting Principal Electrical Engineer will have complete electrical and controls responsibility including leading our electrical staff in multiple locations in the US. The successful individual will be responsible for decisions related to business, staffing, and software/technology. This position will interact with Mr. Currier, clients, associates, team members, and others that will demand a high degree of reliance placed on his/her engineering interpretations and advice. The Consulting Principal Electrical Engineer makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative, technically appropriate, cost-effective, and have an important impact on firm deliverables and managed staff. The position requires practical skill in budgeting internal labor and resources for projects, negotiation & persuasion, and project construction costs. This is for a consulting position, and assignments will be given in terms of broad general objectives within the existing business, but independent business development will be encouraged. Mr. Currier will mentor and guide the successful candidate toward personal business opportunities.
Project Engineering/Management Responsibilities• Manage the performance of electrical staff on a daily basis, interface with project engineersand direct construction administration services• Understanding of aging/legacy electrical power and controls suited to developing electricaldiscipline concepts related to process revisions, facility repair and replacement/upgrade ofpetroleum facilities, systems, and components• Coordinate sub-consultants (and other technical resources) to assure proper design, utilityinterface and successful project delivery to clients and operators• Excellent spoken and written communication skills
Consulting Responsibilities:• Manage and/or perform analysis, evaluations, concepts, designs, peer reviews, andinvestigations of existing facility electrical and control systems, with emphasis on power,VFD’s, lighting, PLC and other controls, SCADA, facility communications and basic security• Prepare and review reports for electrical systems from design, operation, and maintenanceperspective including identification of items requiring remedial action and estimated repaircosts• Conceptual development including ROM estimates for conceptual construction costs, etc.• Select, a transition to and utilize up-to-date electrical production software
Primary Responsibilities:As Registered Principal Electrical Engineer, serve as electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME), setting minimum design standards for electrical and control systems within the Petroleum-based marketplace Currier & Company serves.• Provide expert advice on electrical and control issues in support of the design, construction and commissioning activities of new and existing plants• Perform infrastructure studies and feasibility studies to conceive and program possible projects for owner consideration• Set internal standards for design and project specifications• Self-starter with the demonstrated ability to work within a design team• Select, manage and train contract staff activities for electrical and controls• Develop and maintain approved vendors list(s)• Verify the design integrity of work carried out by engineering contractors, sub-consultants and team members to ensure that the proposed solutions are technically sound, information is reasonably complete and therefore meet operability and maintainability requirements• Participate in the development of commissioning and start-up specifications and procedures• Support maintenance and operations staff on a consulting basis and participate in teams to troubleshoot customer issues
Essential Experience:• Petroleum storage, loading and unloading systems• Hazardous Area Classification design including hardware applications• Systems with voltages: 13.8kV, 4.16kV, 2.4kV, and low voltage• General Circuit Breaker Technologies• PLC hardware including distributed PLC applications• SCADA for Electrical controls, PLC and related low voltage Power Systems• Motors for pumps up to 250 HP• Standby & Emergency Generators• Cathodic Protection hardware and systems• Motor Operated Valves (MOVs) and actuator alternatives• Sales / extensive client-stakeholder contact including proposals for electrical consulting
General project design tasks:Excellent knowledge of the petroleum facility environment and the nature of design-related thereto.Specific knowledge in the areas of Design of source, main power distribution, and motor controlcenters (including layout, transformer sizing, automatic transfer switch sizing, bus sizing, breakersizing, and single line diagram preparation); Design of control systems including ladder diagrams;Sizing wire and conduit; Facility layout of wire and conduit; Design and layout of duct banks and pullboxes; Design and layout of lighting and receptacle systems including panelboard schedules andreflective ceiling plans; and preparation of point to point wiring diagrams. Working knowledge ofvarious processes such as storage tanks, pumps, metering, leak detection, SCADA, distributedinstrumentation, PLCs, I/O, facility operations software including Wonderware ™, filtration, pipelines,barges, rail cars, etc.. Knowledge and applications of industry code and standards like A4A, NEC,NFPA, various state codes, etc. The individual must have the ability to conduct independent fieldinvestigations and collect field data to support design work. Very good communication skills, bothwritten and oral, are essential. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, Adobe apps, and thecurrent version(s) of AutoCAD. Familiarity with various permitting authority tendencies and trends isimportant.
