The Imperial Irrigation District, headquartered in Imperial, California, employs over 1,325 employees and provides electric power to more than 165,000 customers in the Imperial Valley and parts of Riverside and San Diego counties. IID’s mission is to protect its water rights and energy balancing authority, deliver the highest level of customer service, and maintain system reliability for the sustained benefit of the regional economy, the environment, and the communities it serves while in a fiscally responsible manner.
Reporting to the Deputy Energy Manager, the Chief Electrical Engineer/Manager, Planning & Engineering will manage a team of approximately 75 professional and technical staff. The Chief Engineer oversees the system planning studies, engineering studies, design, and technical planning functions for the Imperial Irrigation District’s transmission, substation and distribution system. Additionally, the Chief Engineer oversees, and is directly involved with, short- and long-term system, program and project plans, upgrades, OATT studies, and Transmission Service Studies for the Energy Department.
The Chief Electrical Engineer/Manager, Planning & Engineering will provide the vision, roadmap, credentialed technical acumen, and hands on working knowledge to build and transform IID’s various technical organizations into a cohesive working unit. He/she will instill a shared purpose that is understood throughout the working unit; provide working level knowledge and leadership; elevate the group’s technical skills; improve technical compliance to applicable codes; become the driving force to ensure new programs are developed and receive continued active oversight to insure code required technical requirements are established and sustained; and to instill additional technical rigor while moving the multiple organization’s long range planning efforts from reactionary to proactive in order to better position the IID Energy Department for future impending and as yet undetermined changes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The successful candidate will be charged with developing and shaping IID’s system growth and reliability, affecting generations to come in Southern California. Key to this process will be the ability to lead through change, addressing challenges through executive agility and an esprit de corps. He/she will hold an undergraduate degree in Engineering, as well as a Professional Engineer license. A graduate degree in Business or Engineering, as well as a working knowledge of the Spanish language, will be considered a plus. Further, an early career built within the context of an “academy” utility organization is a must. Later career experiences could include work with industry sectors such as EPC firms, merchant transmission developers, or independent system operators.
