THE POSITION The principal function of an employee in this class is to develop engineering designs, conduct engineering design review, lead and perform project management activities, including complex, multi-phase capital improvement projects, and provide technical assistance to other City Departments. The work is performed under the direct supervision of an Engineer III or Deputy Director but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. Experience, professional license and the performance of additional supervision, oversight, inspection, complexity of projects and certification of plans as a licensed Engineer distinguish this class from the class of Civil Engineer I. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees in the Engineering Department, other city employees, contractors, utilities, other governmental agencies, consulting engineers and the public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment with some field trips to project sites.
