Responsibilities & Requirements
The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University invites applications for three tenure-system faculty positions, one each in the areas of geotechnical engineering, materials engineering and cyber-physical systems, with preferred start date of September 1, 2020. The search is open at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor levels, depending on qualifications.
For the geotechnical engineering position, we are primarily interested in applicants with expertise in energy geotechnics and coastal geotechnics. Also of interest is environmental geotechnics. Desired research focus for the materials engineering candidates is on complex and multifunctional materials. Additional areas of interest are the micro- and nano-engineered materials, and additive manufacturing. For the position in cyber-physical systems, expertise is desired on data science and analytics (e.g. artificial intelligence and machine learning) in support of smart cities and civil infrastructure systems. In addition to noted areas of expertise, of high importance is the candidates' intellectual depth and promise in research and teaching. Individuals with the ability to conduct multidisciplinary research through their own endeavors, as well as through collaborations within and outside the department, are particularly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities for the positions include developing a robust externally-funded research program, pursuing high impact scholarly research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as part of the civil engineering curricula, advising and guiding students, and becoming engaged in outreach and professional activities. A Ph.D. degree in a field related to the position focus is required; and a professional engineer's license, or the potential to obtain one is highly preferred.
This is a tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: September 2020.

Civil Engineering at Stony Brook was established in 2012 and is now one of nine academic departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The department currently consists of 8 tenure-system faculty members with approximately 200 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. The new faculty members will thus play a key role in the continued growth and development of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University. The department recently developed a number of key research facilities, including an 85-foot integrated wave and current flume facility, a super-computing cluster with over 1,200 cores and 70 TB data storage, and an environmental cyclic triaxial capable of controlling temperature (from -20 degrees C to 60 degrees C), degree of saturation and load type (static or dynamic).
As one of only two comprehensive (Bachelors to PhD) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York System, the Department of Civil Engineering at SBU is playing a key role in addressing the critical infrastructure challenges regionally and globally. The department is also a partner in two New York State centers: the Center for Clean Water Technology and the Infrastructure, Transportation and Security Center. Faculty in the college collaborate with researchers in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) and the Advanced Energy Research Technology Center (AERT), which was recently awarded $38.5 million to administer an offshore wind research and development consortium.
