Dean, Rutgers School of Nursing
Newark, New Brunswick, and Blackwood, New Jersey
Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Rutgers School of Nursing (School of Nursing or School). Created by a historic merger in 2013 with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), RBHS is one of the few academic health centers in the country with the full spectrum of human health schools, and is dedicated to a mission of excellence in education, research, and patient care. With more than 8,100 students and 2,300 faculty, RBHS awards about 1,500 degrees annually and has academic centers across the state.
As one of eight schools under RBHS, the Rutgers School of Nursing community includes more than 1,700 undergraduate and graduate students, 105 full-time faculty, and 85 full-time staff members on campus locations in Newark, New Brunswick, and Blackwood, making it one of the largest, most comprehensive, and preeminent nursing schools in the country. The School’s academic offerings include bachelor’s, master’s, post-master’s, DNP, and PhD programs. The School has one of the largest DNP programs in the country.
The School is proud of its diversity and commitment to supporting a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment. The School boasts an exceptionally diverse student body, with about 60 percent of its students identifying as part of underrepresented groups. The School of Nursing has its own Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program, which offers financial and academic support for exceptional New Jersey students whose economic and educational circumstances have put them at a disadvantage. In 2018 and 2019, the School received the Best Schools for Men in Nursing award from the American Association of Men in Nursing in recognition of their significant efforts to recruit and retain male students.
Reporting to the Chancellor of RBHS, the Dean of the Rutgers School of Nursing will advance the School’s research and scholarship while supporting its excellence in nursing education and practice. The Dean will increase research productivity and funding; recruit, empower, and integrate a talented group of faculty and staff; ensure an excellent student experience; and nurture vital relationships with faculty, staff, and other RBHS community members. With this in mind, the Dean will bring excellent listening, communication, and interpersonal skills. The Dean will play a public leadership role with a variety of stakeholders and is expected to attract resources to further the mission of the School. The Dean should demonstrate a keen understanding of the changing healthcare environment and how to prepare the next generation of nurse leaders, as well as a demonstrated commitment to diversity and to interprofessional healthcare education and delivery.
The Dean must be a registered nurse (RN) with a graduate degree in nursing, and must also hold a research doctoral degree. The Dean must have a current or eligible RN licensure to practice nursing in the State of New Jersey. Significant experience in nursing leadership, education, practice, research, and scholarship is expected. Diversity is highly valued, and members of groups underrepresented in nursing are strongly encouraged to apply.
