GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Engineer or Scientist, under the direction of the management, is responsible for executing the projects assigned. Such projects include the drafting of engineered wood standards, their test methods and associated criteria, and evaluating products produced by member companies, through testing and product evaluation. Duties can also include performing engineering advisory services for the public, member manufacturers and the APA staff. The Staff Engineer may also assist in or take the lead in performing the necessary research on proposed new or modified application of engineered wood products for construction and industrial markets. The goal is to provide the best technical service to the clients of the Technical Services Division.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Must hold a Master’s degree (M.S.) or higher in engineering or wood science from an accredited four-year college or university or a combination of a degree in a related technical field plus industry experience. Must possess a broad knowledge of engineered wood products, wood science or engineering. A professional registration is a plus.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present complex ideas to technical and non-technical audiences and to top management, public groups and/or board of directors.
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to travel (internationally and domestically) 5 - 10% of the time.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
