The Department of Mining and Geological Engineering (MGE) at The University of Arizona (UA) is seeking nominations and applications for a Department Head with excellent leadership skills and enthusiasm for world class research, innovative teaching, and industrial collaboration. The future MGE Department Head must be an innovative and visionary academic leader who can spearhead the continuing transformation of Mining and Geological Engineering for the challenges of the 21st century. The Department Head is responsible for leading a dynamic department which includes a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, as well as a modern teaching and research laboratories and other facilities. Candidates are expected to have extensive research and teaching experience at a level sufficient to qualify for appointment as a tenured Full or Associate Professor. A candidate with accomplishments in administrative leadership and team-building is preferred.
As one of the first mining programs in the United States, the department has attracted some of the foremost experts in field as well as faculty with extensive experience working in the mining and geology industries. This has allowed the program to evolve with the modern world of mining, while retaining the breadth of knowledge and legacy of a top-tier institution. These advancements and modernized curriculum, which includes techniques in analysis, modeling and simulation, have made UA’s program one of the most comprehensive mining and geological engineering programs available.
The UA, a Research I, Land-grant, Hispanic Serving institution, ranks 20th among public institutions in annual research expenditures. The Department of Mining and Geological engineering remains part of the UA’s larger College of Engineering, which the U.S. News & World Report ranks as one of the top engineering schools in the nation. We are one of only 2 mining programs that owns a student-run underground teaching mine (San Xavier).
