ABOUT THE POSITION
The County of Colusa is recruiting for a Director of Public Works to plan, direct, manage, and oversee the activities and operations of the Public Works Department. This includes: Engineering, road and bridge maintenance, traffic control, landfill, equipment maintenance, and the County’s transportation programs; serves as Floodplain Administrator, Executive Director of Transportation Commission, Executive Director of Transit Agency, and if qualified, serves as Road Commissioner and County Engineer, may also serve if needed and qualified, as the County Surveyor; coordinate assigned activities with other County departments and outside agencies; provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Board of Supervisors.
The Director of Public Works leads a technical staff of 48 and manages a budget of over $19.2 million. The Director reports to the County Administrative Officer and works closely with all other County departmental managers.

The ideal candidate will display flexibility, adaptability, and resiliency suitable for the demands of today’s dynamic environment and will also be adept at managing high-profile and sometimes controversial issues. This individual will manage and direct a variety of major County Programs that requires creative ability, resourcefulness and discriminating judgment in the analysis and solution of complex problems, and the ability to make technical decisions on specialized matters. Emphasis is placed on overall management skills to guide and direct the organization in a manner that achieves policy goals of the County and integrates programs and employees in the best cost-effective and efficient way within available resources.

The hiring salary range indicated above has six annual merit steps with approximately 5% between each step (Licensed: $116,184 - $148,764 or Unlicensed: $105,240 - $134,748). Annual advancement is based upon successful performance. The successful applicant can anticipate being offered a salary between steps 1 through 6 depending on experience and qualifications. The full salary range goes up to step 15 ($190,488 for Licensed and $172,536 for Unlicensed). Steps 7-15 are additional merit steps and eligibility for step advancement is based on 2 years of satisfactory performance at the previous step. Steps 7 through 14 provide increases of 2.5% each. Step 15 provides a 5% increase.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
