The University of South Florida (USF) is seeking a strategic visionary to build on the strong foundation already found in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).
USF is a high-impact, global research university dedicated to student success. USF is classified as a top tier research university by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a distinction attained by only 2.5 percent of all universities. In just one year, USF ascended 14 positions in USNWR rankings to its current position in the top 50 best public universities in the country. USF proudly boasts of its position as #5 in the nation in patents awarded and as one of only three Preeminent Research Universities in the state of Florida. Notably, USF was recently awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest and most prestigious national honor organization in America. All the while, USF continues to be recognized nationally for its accessibility, its diversity, and its investment in student success. In short, USF is a thriving academic powerhouse committed to continued upward movement.
USF CSD is well positioned within the University to excel. CSD is located within the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences (CBCS). CBCS is a research-intensive college committed to community-based work derived from evidenced-based practices. This strong ethos of research-to-practice positions CSD well to achieve its mission of "Creating pathways to communication by bridging research to practice." Moreover, shared interests in College departments such as Aging Studies, Social Work, Child and Family Studies, and Engineering afford multiple opportunities for collaboration and cross-disciplinary fertilization within the supportive College infrastructure.
CSD faculty includes Speech-Language Pathologists, audiologists, sign-language interpreters, scholars of Deaf culture, linguists, hearing scientists, speech scientists and psychologists. The department considers communication issues from both humanistic and medical perspectives, providing multidisciplinary perspectives on issues such as language, literacy, hearing, and speech. To do this, CSD collaborates across USF with entities such as USF Health and Biomedical Engineering. Our Au.D. program is currently ranked #17 in USNWR and our MS SLP program is ranked #53. CSD has a diverse portfolio of funded research from NIH, NSF, Department of Defense, Department of Education, and Industry sponsors. Last year, CSD’s research profile continued to grow with more than $11,904,540 in grant proposals and with $2,119,944 in grants awarded. This year the department has already exceeded last year’s award level.
CSD's efforts are multifaceted. It houses multiple graduate and undergraduate degree programs including a research-intensive doctoral degree.
Speech and Hearing Clinics provide evidence-based interventions in a context that trains students for cutting-edge clinical work. Notably, the department is also home to an ASL interpreter training program, an ASL interpreter referral agency, a Deaf Studies program, and the Bolesta Center which provides listening and spoken language support to individuals with hearing loss across the lifespan.
