The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applicants for at least one tenure/tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or full Professor in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering. UTSI is a UTK graduate education and research institute located adjacent to the USAF Arnold Engineering and Development Complex in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
Responsibilities include teaching graduate engineering courses, conducting research in engineering, developing externally funded research programs, and producing archival publications in leading scholarly journals. It is expected that the candidate will develop graduate courses in their area of research to facilitate departmental growth. A Ph.D. is required, at time of the appointment, in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Primary consideration will be given to those with capabilities and interests relevant to aerothermodynamics and propulsion. The department is actively growing in this area and current funded research has driven the need for expansion of our experimental and simulation capabilities. Desirable research areas include, but are not limited to: optical diagnostic techniques, experimental aerothermodynamics, simulations resolving turbulent scales, combustion-oriented research, atmospheric and/or space propulsion research, and uncertainty quantification. However, all outstanding candidates possessing a strong background in fundamental science and engineering relevant to aerospace and/or mechanical engineering will be considered as at least one position is anticipated and there are many emerging opportunities for collaborative multidisciplinary research. The successful applicant(s) will be expected to work closely with Arnold Engineering Development Complex on research projects and relevant academic courses and must be able to comply with ITAR restrictions.
The College of Engineering is undergoing a period of substantial growth in both physical infrastructure and research expenditures as it seeks to become a Top-25 ranked Public Institution. The College presently has seven departments with 181 tenured or tenure track faculty, 3,508 undergraduates and 1,155 graduate students. The Department currently has 41 tenure track faculty and enrolls some 1,331 undergraduate and 182 graduate students. Research expenditures in the department are currently greater than $15M per year.
