SUMMARY OF DUTIES:The co-op in Amtrak’s Network Planning organization is an exciting year-long opportunity to gain meaningful experience in intercity transportation planning while assisting in the transformation of America’s Railroad. The intern/co-op will work collaboratively with Amtrak Network Planning, Market Research, Finance and other departments on projects relating to National Network route and service changes, and will assist in the development and/or update of Amtrak’s Equipment Asset Line Plan (Fleet Plan), submitted annually to Congress and the US Department of Transportation (USDOT). The co-op will have an opportunity to learn broadly about Amtrak’s business practices while being charged with research and document development projects with support and guidance from Amtrak senior staff.
National Network: Assist in research and development of proposals to change Amtrak routes and services. Includes the development of maps, tables or other documents; Research of state rail plans, current and historic train schedules and railroad employee timetables and other resources; Synthesis of inputs from a variety of stakeholders to develop deliverables supporting or guiding service decisions; Review of documents prior to transmittal to executive or external audiences. Additionally, the co-op will likely be tasked with crafting GIS deliverables to show the network for a variety of ad-hoc projects.
Equipment Asset Line Plan (Fleet Plan): Assist in development of Amtrak’s Fleet Plan, including gathering and presenting information from internal teams, databases and systems regarding fleet details and usage; develops exhibits for inclusion in the Fleet Plan and reviews documents prior to transmittal.
Work within these major projects are anticipated to include approximately 50% analytical/managerial problem-solving tasks, 33% communications-related tasks, 10% administrative tasks and 7% other duties.
The co-op will make new contacts in the transportation industry and acquire skills and knowledge in transportation planning, market analysis of intercity transportation, transportation policy, and gather a working knowledge of factors which drive a railroad’s fleet, service and network planning decisions and outcomes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:• Compile data from written sources, databases/systems as well as direct interviews.• Write clearly and succinctly on technical topics.• Create maps and diagrams of transportation networks.• Prepare tables and statistical analysis of transportation services and fleet resources.• Present and communicate findings to decision makers and other staff.• Must be able to protect confidential information in compliance with all applicable company policies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:• Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution. • Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Geographic Information Systems, Business Administration, Logistics, Transportation or Supply Chain Management, Urban Planning, Public Policy or a related field.• Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or sophomore status at minimum. • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Must be available to work a minimum of 15 hours per week between the days/hours of Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:• Experience with ArcMap / ArcGIS• Demonstrated interest in urban planning, transit planning, and/or rail transportation• Junior year or at least two years of academic status preferred.
