The department maintains vibrant and interactive research programs through cooperative projects with the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Producst Center, the OSU New Product Development Center, the Oklahoma Manufacturing Alliance, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology, the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry, the Oklahoma Department of Energy, and with the eight other academic units within the Division.
Departmental faculty and staff are involved in impactful research and Extension programs in a wide variety of subject matter areas including bioenergy, precision agriculture, hydrology and water quality, irrigation management, value-added food processing, sensor systems, and environmental management. Extension and research efforts are supported by unique resources and infrastructure such as the Oklahoma Mesonet, the Stored Products Research and Education Center, the Biobased Products and Energy Center, and the Oklahoma Water Resources Center. Departmental activities are also supported on the Stillwater campus by various departmental labs, the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Machine Shop, and by the Field and Research Services Unit which includes a network of experiment stations throughout the state of Oklahoma.
The Bachelor of Science degree in Biosystems Engineering (BAE) at Oklahoma State University is an ABET accredited program along with the other engineering programs in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology. The BAE department offers a Bachelor of Science in Biosystems Engineering with four options: Machine Systems and Agricultrual Engineering, Bioprocessing and Food Processing, Environment and Natural Resources, or Pre-Med. The department has proposed a new B.S. degree in Ag Systems Technology through the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The department strives to provide the comprehensive education necessary to prepare students for successful, productive, and rewarding careers in engineering for agricultural, food, and biological systems. Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering students have won numerous elite awards including Truman, Udall, Fullbright, and NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, and for five of the last ten years, an OSU BAE student has won the ASABE Yoerger Pre-Professional Engineer of the Year Award.
