The City of Salinas is establishing an eligibility list to immediately fill the City Engineer position following City Council approval on August 13, 2019.SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: All applicants must provide proof of education and registration as a Civil Engineer in the State of California at the time of application or submit to the Human Resources Department prior to the final filing date. Applications are incomplete without the required documents.Summary of Duties: The City Engineer is responsible to plan, organize, direct, and manage the City Engineer functions of the Public Works Department; to be responsible for the development, organization, and administration of the City of Salinas capital improvement projects; to develop and update engineering standards; to perform a variety of the most difficult and complex professional office and field engineering work; to prepare plans, designs, and specifications for a variety of City projects; to review work prepared by outside consultants; to prepare engineering reports, to supervise, train, and evaluate work for staff assigned to the City Engineer function; to monitor work-flow and seek outside consultants to maintain Capital Improvement Project schedule; and to provide professional engineering consultation for the City Council, City Manager, Department Director, and other City staff.This a management level position that performs highly skilled managerial and supervisorial duties. Distinguished from other lower level jobs by its experience, expertise, and performance of complex and high-level responsibilities. May serve as the Department Director in the Director's absence.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent will make decisions daily regarding management, oversight, direction, and operations of the Public Works Department. Works with only limited supervision and makes wide ranging personnel and work delegation decisions.
Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college in civil engineering or a related field.Experience: Six years of professional engineering experience including four years in program or project management, and four years of supervisory experience. Administrative experience in municipal government is preferred.Licenses and Certifications: A valid State of California Driver's License; must be a registered Civil Engineer in the State of California.
