Provide strategic direction and management for the Engineering and Building Services Department which currently includes the City Engineer of Public Services, three Building Inspectors, and one Administrative Clerk. Oversee the permitting process for all building construction within the City while maintaining a high level of customer service. Coordinate the permitting, design, and construction process for commercial projects. Serve as the City’s Building Official/Chief Code Official. As such, this position is responsible for interpreting, applying, and enforcing provisions of building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other types of codes. Oversee capital planning, projects and budget.
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field; certification as a Professional Engineer (PE); and minimum five (5) years previous professional civil engineering or construction experience is required; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Alabama driver’s license and an Alabama Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification. Candidates with a P.E. certification from any state other than Alabama will be required to obtain an Alabama P.E. within one year of hire. Must possess and maintain certification as a Building Official (CBO) by the International Code Council within the first two years of employment.
