Statement of Duties and Responsibilities: This position is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment with approximately 50% extension and 50% teaching and applied research responsibilities. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the area of agricultural and industrial occupational safety and health, with emphasis on eliminating safety hazards, reducing injuries and fatalities, and improving worker health across the spectrum of production agriculture. This can include machinery, animal, and plant systems; processing facilities, and human capital and management systems. The extension and research programs will focus on the integration of applications of engineering and technology solutions to workplace hazards and risks, theory-based educational approaches to safety education, and the promotion of safety and health best management practices to reduce exposure to hazards and risk in agricultural and related industries. Teaching responsibilities include delivery of at least two of the following courses: TSM 421 Ag Safety – Injury Prevention, TSM 422 AG Health–Illnesses Prevention, and TSM 425 Managing Ag Safety Risk. The successful candidate will manage the agricultural safety and health traineeship program for graduate students and the minor for undergraduates. The successful candidate will be expected to build on existing internationally recognized extension and research programs in agricultural safety and health. Currently, this program generates over half-million dollars in programmatic support annually.
The candidate will collaborate with the other Safety & Health faculty member involved in the program, will assist in maintaining the long-standing program relationship with the University of Illinois at Chicago NIOSH funded Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety Education and Research Center, and will be involved with the Center’s funded programs in Agricultural Safety Academic and Continuing Education. Strong extension and research collaborations within the department and with faculty in other departments and colleges, as well as nationally and internationally, are expected. Securing external grant support for collaborative projects is imperative.
