The Illinois State Water Survey is seeking to hire an Assistant or Associate Scientist, Climatology to develop a highly-visible outreach and research program to provide climate information to Illinois decision-makers, businesses, professional groups and the public. Work with the Section Head, the State Climatologist Office, Midwestern Regional Climate Center to enrich climate outreach and research activities within the Climate and Atmospheric Science Section. The person selected for this position will become the State Climatologist.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Education: PhD in a field strongly impacted by climate, such as in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, etc. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position.
Assistant Scientist: A record of scholarship in climate related research and program development consistent with education and level of experience. A successful record of performing as a team member on research and/or outreach teams.
Associate Scientist: A minimum of five years translating research concepts to scientists who are not climatologists and to non-scientists. A minimum of five years in climate related research and program development. A successful record of managing research and/or outreach teams.
Knowledge: Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly-employed software and databases.
Education: PhD in atmospheric sciences or climate-related program with an emphasis on climate or climate outreach.
Assistant Scientist: Experience translating research concepts to scientists who are not climatologists and to non-scientists. Interest in developing outreach to underserved populations. Experience performing research at a federally-supported center for atmospheric and related research.
Associate Scientist: A minimum of seven years of post-PhD experience translating research concepts to scientists who are not climatologists and to non-scientists. Interest in developing outreach to underserved populations. Experience performing research at a federally-supported center for atmospheric and related research.
Appointment: This is a regular full-time academic professional appointment, renewable annually based upon satisfactory progress in the position and continued funding. The starting date is negotiable and salary is commensurate with experience and skills.
