ABOUT THE POSITION
JOB SUMMARY:Performs and directs the performance of a variety of standard to complex and difficult laboratory analyses of wastewater, industrial wastes, receiving waters, potable water and other materials.CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:WRD Chemist I - is the entry level of this professional laboratory class series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform the more standardized analyses while learning District policies and procedures and becoming familiar with systems and practices. As experienced is gained, duties become more diversified and are performed under more general supervision. This class is alternately staffed with WRD Chemist II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications for the higher level class.WRD Chemist II - is the experienced level in this series, fully competent to perform the full range of physical, chemical and biological analyses of water, domestic and industrial wastewater, receiving waters, potable water and other samples, using a variety of laboratory instruments and equipment. This class is distinguished from WRD Senior Chemist in that the latter is the working lead level of this class series, directing the work of a small staff in addition to performing the more difficult laboratory analyses.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive and Promotional list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months at either level or may be extended as needed by the Office of Human Resources. The WRD Chemist I is a training underfill position, upon successful completion of the probationary period (520 hours worked to 2,080 hours worked) and the training program, which is up to two (2) years, the successful candidate will be non-competitively promoted to WRD Chemist II.
Education and Experience:WRD Chemist I - Bachelor's Degree in Organic or Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry or a closely related field.WRD Chemist II - In addition to the above: Minimum of one (1) year of professional laboratory chemical analyses. Working Conditions: Work scheduled off-hours shifts. Work with exposure to hazardous chemicals and substances found in the wastewater treatment process.Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment. Chemist I: Possession of a Nevada Water Environment Association Grade I Wastewater Quality Analyst Certification, or equivalent, is desirable. Chemist II: Possession of a Nevada Water Environment Association Grade II Wastewater Quality Analyst Certification, or equivalent, is desirable.Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.
