The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader to be the associate director for biodefense and emerging infectious diseases product development, NIAID, and the director, Office of Biodefense, Research Resources, and Translational Research (OBRRTR) in the NIAID Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID). DMID is the lead extramural research division within NIAID responsible for research on all infectious human pathogens other than HIV and all infectious diseases other than AIDS. DMID’s clinical research efforts include focus on tuberculosis, malaria, influenza, emerging infectious diseases, and other public health threats where industry interest is low. These diseases carry an enormous human burden and pose some of the most important scientific challenges.
The division, which is composed of 201 federal and 27 contract employees, supports a comprehensive portfolio of research grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts with a total annual budget of more than $ l.6 billion. The associate director, NIAID/director, OBRRTR, has scientific responsibility for programs focused on the development of countermeasures (drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines) not only for potential biological threats, but also for all emerging infectious diseases other than HIV, from early product development through advanced clinical evaluation. The position is responsible for the transition of mid-stage products to pharmaceutical partners, non-profit entities, and, in the case of biodefense products, to the Project BioShield acquisition process managed through HHS.
The position collaborates closely with U.S. government senior leaders in making decisions for bio-preparedness. Consequently, the incumbent’s expertise must span basic, clinical, translational, and regulatory disciplines/areas. Fundamentally critical to the position is expertise in the different regulatory pathways for licensure of different product classes (e.g., drugs, diagnostics, vaccines, biologics); expertise in the multiple sectors of the product development enterprise (i.e., clinical and non-clinical activities that guide the design, development, implementation, and oversight of product development); and expertise in product manufacturing.
Additional major responsibilities of this position include liaising with representatives of other NIH ICs, federal and non-federal agencies, international research organizations, professional societies, foundations, the media, and patient advocacy groups; establishing research collaborations with not-for-profit organizations and industry partners; and maintaining a productive work environment meeting equal employment opportunity workplace diversity, staff professional education, and monitoring objectives of NIH.

The successful candidate will be appointed under the Title 42(f) authority at a salary commensurate with experience based on a salary range of $166,500 to $244,000.
