Position Summary The Associate Dean for Research and Innovation (ADRI) is responsible for providing overall leadership of the UIWSOM research enterprise which is a strategic growth focus for the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM).
The UIWSOM research enterprise is tasked with the establishment and management of a research infrastructure supporting the following areas: 1) biomedical science; 2) clinical trials; 3) translational medicine and 4) population health and outcomes research.
Focusing on key areas of excellence and regional need, the goals are to 1) meet the current and future needs of UIWSOM research investigators; 2) increase the efficiency of the study lifecycle; 3) achieve nimbleness and sustainability; 4) be scalable for other UIW health professions schools in the future; 5) optimize the financial performance of UIWSOM's research and scholarly activity; and 6) deliver research and innovation of outstanding quality and impact.
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Osteopathic Medicine, the ADRI will build on the strengths of the SOM, including its faculty, exceptional student diversity, and commitment to social accountability. The Associate Dean for Research and Innovation is responsible for managing and professionally developing four direct reports: Directors of Biomedical, Population Health Outcomes, Clinical Trials and Translational Medicine Research.
The ADRI is the chief research officer for the UIWSOM and the spokesperson and champion for all research, scholarly work and innovation. The ADRI will focus on expanding scholarly activities in all academic areas and developing new institutional research through the development of policies and strategic partnerships within the SOM, UIW, and local, regional, state and national affiliated partners. In close collaboration with the Dean, s/he will serve as the chief liaison between the school and the grants and sponsored programs office, federal and state funding agencies, collaborating institutions as well as other external partners. The ADRI will have responsibility for promoting, supporting, and expanding the research mission within the school while ensuring that these responsibilities are actively and effectively pursued and valued in the faculty personnel process. The successful candidate will also play an important role in assisting faculty to obtain and manage external funding. The ADRI will work closely with the Dean on strategic initiatives to develop the research mission and portfolio in the school.
The ADRI will have faculty duties which include facilitation, service and research as assigned by the Dean. At UIWSOM, medical students learn the basic and clinical sciences in an integrated, learner-centered curriculum that makes extensive use of case-based learning, supplemented by large group interactive sessions. The faculty member will be expected to engage in case-based and large group facilitation and executing all approved policies of instruction. This position is considered a “Responsible Employee” under University of the Incarnate Word's Sexual Misconduct Policy with reporting responsibilities as set out in the policy.
