ISWS is seeking an Scientific Specialist, Hydrologic and Hydraulic Engineer or Senior Scientific Specialist, Staff Engineer, up to two, depending on applicant pool and programmatic need, (specialist or senior specialist level is dependent on qualifications) to lead and administer research activities of the Survey by developing, planning, directing, initiating, and conducting basic and applied research, with an emphasis on conducting and/or reviewing hydrologic and hydraulic studies and communicating the scientific results. This position will be located in Champaign, Illinois.

Major Duties and Responsibilities: Scientific Specialist, Hydrologic and Hydraulic Engineer Research •Conduct hydrologic and hydraulic studies using computer models, data research/capture following applicable standards and data capture protocols. Will involve using a variety of software including, but not limited to: HEC-RAS, HEC-GeoRAS, HEC-HMS, HEC-GeoHMS, and ArcGIS. Projects may use both steady and unsteady computational modes. Research – Publications •Prepare publication-ready profiles, tables, maps, reports and other modes to communicate technical results, data research, model development, and methodology meeting applicable standards. Research – Quality Assurance •Perform Quality assurance checks of models, graphics and reports. Engagement and Outreach •Support activities associated with proposal preparation, including providing technical data and information, •Coordinate activities with project team, engineers and GIS Specialists. •Participate in meetings with team, agency staff, local officials, general public, and private consulting engineers. Other •Professional Development activities such as attending conferences, giving presentations. •Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of PRI. •Keep abreast of developments in this discipline. Senior Scientific Specialist, Staff Engineer Research •Conduct and manage hydrologic and hydraulic studies using computer models, data research/capture following applicable standards and data capture protocols. Projects may use both steady and unsteady computational modes. Use a variety of software including but not limited to: HEC-RAS, HEC-GeoRAS, HEC-HMS, HEC-GeoHMS, and ArcGIS. Research – Publications •Prepare publication-ready profiles, tables, maps and other mediums to communicate technical results, data research, model development, and methodology meeting applicable standards. •Prepare technical reports to document and disseminate scientific results. Engagement and Outreach •Provide technical support with proposal preparation, including estimating staff time and material needs. •Coordinate with GIS team members and serve as a project lead, developing workflow, and protocols. •Participate in team meetings and meetings with agency staff, local officials, and private consulting engineers, •Organize and conduct meetings with local officials, private consulting engineers and other agency staff involved with the project. Administration •Supervise and lead the work of H&H Engineers and/or student employees to achieve success and foster a culture of innovation and high-level performance at both individual and organizational levels. This includes task assignment, scheduling, ongoing performance management with coaching and feedback, career development planning, leave/travel approval, as well as conducting annual performance reviews. Other •Professional Development activities such as attending conferences, giving presentations. •Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of PRI. •Keep abreast of developments in this discipline. |
