The City of Dana Point is currently recruiting for an Assistant Engineer for the Capital Improvements Program (CIP) Division in the Department of Public Works & Engineering Services. This is a journey-level position that performs moderately complex professional and technical civil engineering work in the field and office associated with the planning, budgeting, design, contracting, plan checking, construction and maintenance of public works infrastructure and private development projects. Typical projects include roads, drainage, grading, parks, landscaping, and other related infrastructure improvements.
Typical duties assigned to this position include, but are not limited to:
Generates exhibits and construction drawings for a variety of City public works projects using AutoCAD Civil 3D and other related civil design software.
Generates engineer’s estimates, special engineering studies, and other contract documents.
Review and evaluate preliminary and final plans, specifications, and studies of consulting engineers and private developments for moderately complex public or private development projects for conformance with City, Federal and State regulations and codes regarding line, grade, size, elevation and location of structures.
Provide technical and professional engineering support services relative to assigned area of responsibility.
Recommend technical engineering decisions and mitigation measures for major construction and development projects assigned; and establish technical criteria and standards.
Effectively use AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS Arc Map, other design programs and software, and standard office software such as word processing, spreadsheets and Adobe Acrobat.
Prepare engineering plans, designs, estimates, and specifications for a variety of public works projects and complete projects effectively.
Solve engineering problems, utilizing a variety of civil engineering techniques.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in civil engineering or a related field.
Two to five (preferred) years of increasingly responsible professional experience in civil engineering, focused on design/AutoCAD Civil 3D work.
