The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), located in downtown Chicago, is currently accepting applications to fill the Senior Planner position.
Under the direction of the Local Planning Manager, the Senior Planner conducts or manages multifaceted land use and transportation plans including transit-oriented development plans and transit corridor studies, in support of the RTA’s Strategic Plan. Supports local governments with the implementation of completed plans by offering technical expertise and by conducting or managing specific efforts such as zoning code updates and the establishment of special funding districts. Responsible for conducting or managing individual projects through the RTA’s Community Planning and Access to Transit programs as well as through federally funded grant programs or other agency-led efforts. Develops and nurtures partnerships with local municipalities, counties, the RTA Service Boards (Chicago Transit Authority, Metra, and Pace) and other regional agencies. Contributes to research activities on best planning practices and emerging planning, transit-oriented development, economic development and transit service improvement topics, and supports the development and update of program information resources and guides that can be used by municipalities to advance their planning efforts. The position involves attending night and some weekend meetings and requires travel throughout the six-county region.

We are looking for someone with the knowledge, skills, and abilities equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Architecture, Geography, or a related field. Master’s Degree and / or AICP certification is preferred. The ideal candidate will possess public or private experience in urban planning with a focus on transit-oriented development, land use planning and multi-modal transportation skills. Position requires experience with the steps to develop a plan, with local land use regulations, development processes and zoning best practices. Experience and knowledge of local transportation planning and transportation/land use relationships is required. Experience working with land use developers and brokers and negotiating land deals is desirable. Experience and familiarity with local financing tools and local and federal grant funding sources for both land use projects and transit service projects. Proficiency with Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) required. Experience with digital photography, Photoshop, ESRI GIS, Google SketchUp, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or other visualization and graphics tools preferred. Position requires ability to attend night meetings and travel within the six-county RTA service area. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
The RTA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The RTA reimburses for travel at the federal rate for mileage reimbursement. Relocation is not available. For more information about the RTA, visit our website at www.rtachicago.com.
