The Director of Engineering Services/City Engineer is a regular, full-time, administrative, at-will, exempt position. Under general administrative direction, plans, directs, manages, and oversees the activities and operations of the Engineering Services Department including review and approval of new development maps and construction plans; administers and monitors consulting contracts; traffic engineering; preparation of the five-year Capital Improvement Program; related support services; coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; acts as a member of the city management team and provides support to the City Manager.
The ideal candidate is results oriented with a diverse engineering background, demonstrated expertise and professional acumen in both private and local government entities, and demonstrates the leadership necessary to successfully perform the broad scope of routine to highly complex engineering services, and maintain necessary work relationships in a dynamic, fast paced and developing organization. This position will direct and oversee all the activities of a City Engineering department situated in City Hall, and will share office space with the Community Development Department (Building and Planning). The Engineering Department activities include direction and implementation of the ambitious Capital Improvement Program (CIP), the review and approval of new development maps, subdivisions, and construction plans; administration and monitoring multiple consulting contracts; and traffic engineering responsibilities.
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in engineering, business administration, public administration, construction management or a related field.
Experience: Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible experience in public sector construction management, public works maintenance management, or related activity including three years of management and administrative responsibility in a municipal setting.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Driver License.
Possession of registration as a Civil Engineer by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
