Working with Balance staff and specialists from other firms, the Senior Staff Engineer will apply expertise in hydrology, hydraulics, environmental fluid mechanics, stormwater management, and engineering design to projects covering a wide range of water resources analysis and design challenges. The engineer will carry out assessments of channel design and stability, as well as modeling of watershed processes and environmental hydrodynamics. Assignments may involve field and analytical elements, plus coordination with consultants in other disciplines and regulatory agency professionals.
This position has responsibility for carrying out technical activities and/or managing the work on assigned projects including engineering analysis and design. It is expected that the Senior Staff Engineer will routinely manage small to medium-sized projects (up to $100K) and may serve as project manager or technical lead on larger tasks or projects as assigned. The Senior Staff Engineer plans, schedules, and conducts assigned engineering work; monitors work for compliance to all applicable codes, accepted engineering practices, and Balance standards; assists with the management and maintenance of stream gages and other monitoring sites, including associated field measurements, potentially during inclement weather. Employees in this classification also ensure effective communication and coordination on assigned projects between all disciplines and all other project participants.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Performance of duties and tasks requires use of standard office equipment, including work at computer terminals. May be required to use step stools and carry records and files.
Stream gaging and soils evaluations may require the use of bridge-board, cable-suspension equipment, and sand or bentonite. Work will include field surveys in challenging environments and adverse weather, often with the need to transport and operate associated survey equipment. Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs.
