The Civil Service Commission of the City of Decatur will conduct an examination and establish an eligible register for the following classification:
ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN I
Hourly Pay: $22.01 with a growth potential to $27.21 in accordance with collective bargaining agreement pay plan

Persons passing all phases of the selection process will be placed on a Civil Service eligible register which will be used for a period of two years or until exhausted. Selection of candidates will be made according to the Civil Service laws for cities, as modified by the City Code of the City of Decatur, Illinois.
Applicants must successfully complete all portions of the selection process. The examination process will consist of the following:
NATURE OF WORK
The position performs responsible, routine technical work in the field and office in connection with the design and construction of Public Works projects. Duties include construction observation of routine capital projects; assisting in survey work; conducting inventories of public infrastructure; assisting in the preparation of engineering plans, maps, estimates, studies and reports; general review of plans for compliance with City standards and specifications; monitoring the progress of private development projects and performing final acceptance inspection; and responding to routine information inquiries and complaints relating to engineering functions and responsibilities.
Under the direct supervision of the manager responsible for technical personnel. Routine assignments are performed independently and reviewed upon completion. Detailed assignment instructions and regular project guidance is received from an engineer or advanced level technician for new or non-routine work.

DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or equivalent, including or supplemented by vocational school or college level courses directly relating to civil engineering, surveying or construction; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Must possess, or obtain within 60 days of employment, a valid State of Illinois driver’s license.
Employees must establish residency within the corporate limits of the City of Decatur for the first five (5) years of employment, and within the corporate limits of Macon County thereafter. Upon original appointment, an appointee may reside outside said limits but shall be required as a condition of continued employment to comply with said residency requirement no later than ninety (90) days after the completion of their 6-month probationary period.
SICK LEAVE 1 day per month granted, accumulative to 240 days.
VACATION 2 weeks after 1 year of service; 3 weeks after 7 years of service; 4 weeks after 14 years of service; 5 weeks after 20 years of service; 1 additional duty day per year after 25 years of service (to a maximum of 30 duty days)

PENSION The City of Decatur contributes to the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF). Employees also contribute at the rate of 4.5% of gross pay. Employee contributions are refundable if employment ends before retirement.
OTHER The City offers a four-tier health insurance program for employees and their dependents. Employees contribute toward the monthly premium for single coverage and/or family coverage through payroll deduction. The City provides a $20,000 life insurance policy at no cost to the employee. Dependent coverage is offered. Employees may purchase additional term life insurance sponsored by IMRF. Employees may participate in a voluntary group dental and vision insurance plan. Deferred compensation is also available.
