Snohomish County is seeking a dynamic results-oriented leader as the Director of the Surface Water Management Division (SWM) of Public Works. SWM's division consists of a staff of 94 and a $37m annual budget. SWM uses innovative programs and cutting edge science, engineering, and habitat planning to address a wide variety of surface water related urban and rural issues from the Cascade Mountains to the Puget Sound. SWM programs strive to improvethe quality of life for Snohomish County residents by managing storm water, rivers, lakes, as well as being stewards of a sustainable environment for aquatic species and systems.
The position has a great deal of interaction with elected officials and many stakeholders including flood control districts, tribes, conservation districts, state departments, agricultural groups, special purpose districts, salmon protection agencies and federal agencies. The ideal candidate will be expected to build relationships within and outside the County, and promote effective and positive working relationships.Candidates must have the ability to be flexible in a changing environment and must be able to manage expectations and competing interests of a multitude of stakeholders and groups. The Director will be approachable and informal, but confident and will encourage open communication based on an environment of trust and integrity.Knowledge and experience of the budgetary challenges that are faced at this level and the ability to seek creative and resourceful solutions to these challenges will be a plus. Candidates should have a proven track record of delivering results, building accountability and creating a positive working environment of teamwork and innovation.
