Description: The Gottfried Lab at the University of Pennsylvania is looking to hire a postdoctoral researcher to study the basic electrophysiology of perception, learning, and memory in epilepsy patients with medically resistant seizures. This NIH-funded study offers a unique opportunity to record intracranial EEG signals directly from the human brain, and builds on our recent published work (Zelano et al., J. Neurosci. 2016; Jiang et al., Neuron 2017) highlighting odor-evoked oscillatory activity in the medial temporal lobe. The specific goals of this project are to investigate the functional and causal role of theta and gamma oscillations in shaping odor coding and network communication between piriform (olfactory) cortex and the hippocampus, and to gain a mechanistic understanding of odor perception at the level of neuron assemblies in the human brain.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Behavioral or Cognitive Neuroscience, Biology, Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or other closely related field, and will have a proven track record in conducting electrophysiology experiments and analyzing electrophysiological signals, such as LFPs, single unit activity, EEG, MEG, or evoked potentials, from either human or animal models. Expertise in signal processing techniques and advanced programming skills (such as Matlab, R, Python, EEGlab, etc.) is highly desirable. Research experience with human subjects would be useful but not at all essential. Prospective candidates who have expertise in different yet transferable domains are also encouraged to apply.
