The Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a Senior Engineer. CTS recently established the Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program Safety Circuit Rider Program (VA LTAP SCRP) for the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The pilot program will deliver safety-focused transportation training and technical assistance as well as perform road safety assessments in select high crash areas across the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is anticipated that the pilot program will continue for a minimum of 18 months with a likely extension for an additional 12 months. Success of the program may lead to a long-term partnership with VTRC and VDOT.
We are seeking an experienced transportation engineer on a full-time basis for the duration of the initial 18 months and possibly beyond. Applicants must hold a valid professional engineer license during the duration of this appointment.
Primary responsibilities include performing all facets of a road safety assessment for up to 6 local agencies per year and the related tracking, reporting and evaluation; providing engineering technical assistance in response to telephone and email inquiries as well as on-site assistance as needed; providing grant and proposal development support; educating local agencies with respect to state and federal aid opportunities; providing safety-focused in-classroom training to local transportation professionals; championing the low-cost safety improvement initiative of the year including widespread promotion and overseeing the local award selection process; developing and maintaining a SCR database to serve as a resource for transportation agencies in the future; participating in national peer exchanges, conference calls and the national LTAP conference to network and share experiences with other SCRs across the country.
Qualified applicants will possess at least five years of relevant experience in highway safety and at least a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field. A valid professional engineer license is required. Preferred candidates will have specific experience in crash data analysis and safety assessments/audits, familiarity with local agency operations, training curriculum development and delivery in an adult learning environment and grant proposal development. Travel will be necessary at least once per month to locations across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
