The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (www.civ.puc-rio.br) is recruiting for a faculty position in the field of Applied Geology. The Department seeks candidates to teach geology courses for both undergraduate and graduate programs and to carry out top level research in the areas of Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering, including soil and rock engineering, petroleum and mining geology. Women and under-represented ethnic minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
Candidates must be self-motivated and show promise with regard to developing a world-class research program. Proven ability to work in collaborative interdisciplinary teams will be regarded as an asset. Candidates will be expected to build up a research group that includes graduate and postdoctoral students, while providing research experience opportunities for promising undergraduate students.
The successful candidate will be expected to offer an upper division undergraduate course in Geology and Engineering Geology and to develop a cutting edge course for graduate students in his areas of expertise. He is also expected to participate in the department's required interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate courses and to contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through teaching and research. Undergraduate teaching activities will require basic knowledge of the Portuguese / Spanish language.
