SUMMARY OF POSITION ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:This position is for a Postdoctoral Associate who will be in charge of performing various research projects in the Fernandez-Funez lab. Duties will include performing molecular genetics, Drosophila genetics, protein biochemistry, general supervision of the lab, and research management.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB AND THE PERCENTAGE OF TIME SPENT ON EACH FUNCTION40% Sets up and performs laboratory analyses using established protocols or develop new protocols depending on the needs of the current research setting. Some basic duties will include gene cloning, RNA/DNA extraction, protein extraction and Western blotting, generation of transgenic fruit flies (Drosophila), maintain Drosophila strains, immunofluorescence, and fluorescent microscopy.40% Generate and analyze functional assays for prion-protein-dependent neurodegeneration in Drosophila. These specific tasks will include generating crosses as needed by projects, analyzing and quantifying brain structures, performing behavioral studies with Drosophila, and analyzing and quantifying protein conformation. During the course of these experiments, we may need to adapt or develop new procedures. This person will have primary responsibility to develop relevant assays to answer specific issues related to the project. Careful documentation of research data and protocols is expected, as well as basic data analysis with statistical software such as Microsoft Excel. This person will contribute to drafting relevant research results in cooperation with PIs and generate figures for manuscripts. This person will also present relevant results in internal lab meetings as well as in national and international meetings.20% Provides physical supervision of research space. Ensures all routine maintenance on laboratory equipment is performed including inspections as required by UMN Environmental Health and Safety. Responsible for training and supervision of students and others working/volunteering in the lab to ensure compliance with all research guidelines; provides feedback on employee performance as needed. Orders and maintains all supplies/equipment for lab in conjunction with Drs. Fernandez-Funez and Rincon-Limas. SUPERVISION RECEIVED.General goals will be defined between the PIs and this position for each project. The person selected will carry out the work with moderate daily supervision on projects. Based on input from this person, general objectives or specific experiments will be adjusted in consultation with PIs. This person will provide bi-weekly reports of completed work and objectives for the following week.

PROGRAM DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT.Participates in lab meetings and recommends changes to enhance the research mission of the Fernandez-Funez/Rincon-Limas lab.
MONETARY RESPONSIBILITY.Responsible for ordering and maintaining lab supplies, subject to supervisor’s approval.

Required Qualifications:-Ph.D., DDS, DVM, JD, MD or equivalent is required.Preferred qualifications:-Ability to read and interpret guidelines.-Skill in use of personal computer software, including Microsoft Office.-Ability to communicate effectively and to meet deadlines as demanded by the position.-Ability to analyze data and solve minor problems.-Knowledge of basic research safety and EHS/OSHA guidelines.
Machines and equipment used regularly:-Florescent microscope for documenting experiments and image processing (10-20% time)-PCR, Western blot, gel electrophoresis, centrifuges, gel documentation apparatus, film developer, and several other machines for molecular biology and biochemistry (20% time)-Computer time: generation of figures in Photoshop, statistical analysis of data, writing project related documents in Word, preparing presentations in PowerPoint (10-20%)
