The University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Dean of the Biological Sciences Division and the Pritzker School of Medicine. This individual will also serve as Chief Scientific Officer of University of Chicago Medicine.
This is a compelling opportunity to create a vision for research and education throughout the entire Biological Sciences Division (BSD), a $1 billion operation consisting of more than 900 faculty members within both the basic biological sciences and the clinical departments. Research in the BSD includes biology, basic biomedical research, translational research, clinical research, and community and health outcomes research; total sponsored research for FY 17 was $315 million. Educational activities include undergraduate biology classes, highly ranked graduate programs, undergraduate and graduate medical education at the nation's third-most selective medical school, an MD/PhD program, and postdoctoral training. During the current capital campaign, the BSD has raised over $900 million in philanthropic support including a $100 million dollar gift from the Duchossois family in 2016, the largest single gift ever to the biological sciences at the University.
For the right person, this role is an exceptional platform. The University of Chicago offers a world-class College ranked #3 in the United States by US News and World Report and a thriving medical center with total operating revenues of $2 billion. The University's financial position is strong: at the end of FY17, the endowment was $7.8 billion and new philanthropic gifts and commitments for the year totaled $637 million.
The Dean will report to the Executive Vice President for Biology and Medicine and President of the University of Chicago Health System (EVP/PHS) and, for academic matters, to the Provost. The Dean will join a senior leadership team led by the EVP/PHS that will also include the Chief Physician and Dean for Clinical Affairs as well as the University of Chicago Medical Center President. Although the Dean will not have direct oversight of clinical affairs, this leadership structure ensures seamless, mutually beneficial interactions between the research, educational, and clinical missions from both programmatic and budgetary standpoints.
The Dean will inspire gifted colleagues to build institutes, centers, and laboratories that will lead the world in the biological and health sciences. Academic excellence under the Dean's leadership will, in turn, galvanize donors and researchers in support of discoveries that will transform science and human health. The successful candidate will bring proven scientific leadership ability and administrative and budgetary experience from academic units of significant size and complexity. Applicants must have a MD, MD/PhD, PhD, or equivalent degree, and must qualify for the rank of full professor with tenure at the University of Chicago.
