The Associate Research Scientist (ARS) serves as the Director of Research for the Robert A.W. Carleton Laboratory (http://carleton.columbia.edu/).
Research Responsibilities: The ARS incumbent interacts with faculty to develop experimental research and testing proposals of all types of structures, materials, and structural elements. He/she leverages and utilizes laboratory capabilities (equipment, staff, lab assistants, etc.) efficiently. The incumbent estimates and allocates appropriate testing resources. He/she is responsible for maintaining a strong relationship between the lab management and faculty. The ARS incumbent is also responsible for the allocation of space and facilities to faculty, students, projects, etc. The ARS incumbent performs academic research in Experimental Mechanics, Civil Engineering, and related fields. The incumbent acts as PI or Co-I in concert with faculty.
The Director/ARS reports directly to the Chair of CEEM and serves as a liaison between the Chair and the faculty of CEEM, as well as the Board of Trustees of the Carleton Endowment. He/she represents the interests of the Laboratory to the CEEM department, School, and University.
Characteristic duties and responsibilities of the Director include but are not limited to: Providing oversight over Carleton Laboratory staff and operations: implementing safety protocols, enforcing compliance, QA/QC, operating finances, and recharge center. Providing guidance in rate-setting process. Being responsible for short, medium, and long-term strategic development of the Laboratory. Being in charge of the acquisition of major investments in equipment and facilities. Serving as steward of major capital projects: Facilities Capital Projects Management, other vendors, etc. Being responsible for laboratory staff strategy and onboarding/termination. Serving as liaison with the local engineering community and preparing large-scale proposals for industry testing projects. Providing community and University outreach through outreach programs, tours, orientations, etc.
PhD degree in Civil Engineering or relevant field. The candidate must have at least 8 years of experience in field of structures, materials, experimental mechanics. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Independent research capability is of high value.
Preferred Qualifications: Special consideration will be given to candidates having a strong research accomplishment in structural mechanics.
