The Community Development Department's Building & Safety Division is looking for an organized and detail-oriented Engineering Technician I to join their team. The main purpose of the Division is to protect and promote public health, safety and general welfare as they relate to the construction and occupancy of buildings and structures. To accomplish this purpose, the Building & Safety Division provides inspections for new construction, buildings and remodeling of structures for compliance with the local, state and federal laws.As the entry level class in the technical series, the Engineering Technician I works under immediate supervision performing responsible technical work in the review, processing, and issuance of a variety of permits such as building permits, development review permits, and zoning and business license information.The Engineering Technician I also operates and performs routine preventive maintenance on GIS equipment, database backups and restoration, graphic output printers/plotters and other equipment related to computer mapping and GIS; enters and verifies tabular data associated with the mapped elements; inputs and edits municipal infrastructure using ArcGIS software; and utilizes ArcGIS software to produce customized maps and analysis of graphic and tabular data including the selection of map size, projections, datum, scale, shading, colors and symbology.
Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: Equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
One to two years of experience in civil engineering or related drafting work, surveying work or customer service/permitting work. Vocational training in drafting or computer-aided design and drafting is desired.License and/or CertificatesMust possess and maintain an appropriate, valid driver's license.Ideal CandidateIn addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess:
