The Department of Biology at the University of Iowa, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor working at the cutting edge of neurobiology. Topics of particular interest include: 1) neuron-glia interactions; 2) neuro-immune interactions; and 3) the cell and molecular biological foundations of glia function. The Department is home to a diverse group of faculty including many neurobiologists, as well as cell and developmental biologists, geneticists, and evolutionary biologists. Our faculty are well-integrated within the larger neuroscience community on campus, which is experiencing unprecedented growth in financial support for faculty and research infrastructure. Over 100 neuroscientists across five colleges and 26 departments contribute to a collegial and collaborative research environment. The successful candidate will also be a member of the new Iowa Neuroscience Institute, an interdisciplinary framework for integrating neuroscience research and education across campus supported by a $45 million award from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. Additionally, interdisciplinary programs such as the Aging Mind and Brain Initiative and the Center for Immunology may be of interest to the successful candidate. The Department houses its own Integrated Biology Graduate Program, and participates in federally-funded Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs in Neuroscience, Genetics, Immunology, and Human Toxicology. The Department administers a new undergraduate major in Neuroscience, as well as established majors in Biology and in Biomedical Sciences.
The Department of Biology comprises two buildings, connected by a skywalk, located in downtown Iowa City. Core facilities in the Department include the Carver Center for Genomics, offering in-house DNA sequencing and other services, and the Carver Center for Imaging, which houses a multiphoton microscope as well as other confocal and epifluorescence systems. The directly adjacent Carver College of Medicine offers excellent research support, including the Central Microscopy Research Facility, the Iowa Institute for Human Genetics (Genomics and Bioinformatics) and cores in Genome Editing, Proteomics, Viral Vectors, and Flow Cytometry. The Department and CLAS have a strong tradition of supporting the career development of tenure-track faculty.

Successful candidates must have: a Ph.D. in one of the life sciences or related areas; extensive post-doctoral experience; a strong record of research accomplishment as reflected in high-impact publications; evidence of ability to establish an extramurally-funded research program; and an interest in contributing to the Department’s teaching mission, including undergraduate and graduate coursework in topics such as neurobiology, cell and developmental biology, and physiology. Desirable qualifications include: the potential for synergistic interactions with existing faculty in the Department and across campus; the ability to introduce novel approaches or techniques; and broad recognition amongst colleagues in the candidate’s area of research.
