The City of Costa Mesa, is seeking three (3) Senior Engineers and one (1) Principal Civil Engineer to perform responsible and complex professional level engineering work in the field and office associated with design, development, investigation, construction and maintenance of parks and parkway projects, public works infrastructure and City facilities; serve as resident engineer and/or project manager on assigned projects; and perform related duties as required.
Planning, organizing, supervising and reviewing the work of subordinate staff is a major function of positions in this class. Incumbents generally supervise staff of professional level engineering and/or inspection employees who perform varied and responsible field and office engineering work. Positions in this class normally supervise positions that are designated as first-level supervisors. Supervision, at this level is normally over multiple project teams. Positions in these classes perform the most complex professional engineering and administrative work, frequently make difficult decisions that require interpretation and professional judgment, and communicate with departmental management to obtain direction on matters that deviate from practice, policy and/or generally accepted professional standards. Depending on the assignment, work is reviewed by the City Engineer or Transportation Services Manager through conferences and reports, principally for determining general progress, professional competence and adherence to pertinent policies, procedures and regulations.
Senior Engineer requires experience at a supervisory level with responsibility for advanced journey-level professional civil engineering work that relates to municipal public works design, park development and design, construction, administration and contracts.
Principal Civil Engineer requires four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of civil engineering, including three (3) years supervisory and administrative experience related to municipal public works planning, design, construction and administration. Certification as a Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD) and Practitioner (QSP) is highly desirable.
Both positions require graduation from a four-year accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a closely related field. Registration as a Civil Engineer or Traffic Engineer in the state of California is mandatory.
